Unigames – Day 4
Ateneo won two football matches Wednesday morning at the 15th Unigames in Dumaguete City. The women’s team qualified for a spot in the semis after winning 4-0 against La Salle Bacolod. Meanwhile, the Blue Booters made all four goals in the first half to close their Unigames stint with a win against the University of Northern Philippines Sharks, 4-0. Senior striker Yu Murayama made two goals to give Ateneo their first and only win in the tournament.
The mercy rule was in effect as Ateneo lost to RTU in four fast-paced innings. RTU’s pitcher had a field day on the mound forcing Ateneo’s batters to all strike out. Ateneo pitcher Amanda La O’ gave up 12 hits that gave RTU a 15-0 win.
In lawn tennis, the women’s team won a slot in the finals after they beat UP Diliman in two games. Michelle Pang dictated the tempo in the singles game, while Ivy de Castro and Joanne Opulencia rallied for another win that forced UP to bow out.
Meanwhile, the men’s team saw all green in back-to-back matches against CSB and DLSU. Things went downhill for Ateneo after Mark Balce won the first singles match against CSB.
The blue shirts, however, remained unruffled as they faced DLSU later in the day. In the tie-breaking singles match, rookie Andre Banate surprised DLSU with a win via a strong comeback in the second and third sets. Ateneo beat their Taft rivals for the second time in the Unigames 2 matches to 1
