Unigames – Day 3

A rookie-laden Ateneo team lost 0-3 in men’s football against Central Philippines University, Tuesday morning at the 15th Unigames in Dumaguete City. The Blue Booters played a tension-fuelled game against an aggressive CPU team. The booters go for a win in Wednesday’s match versus UNP.

The men’s volleyball team closed out their Unigames stint with a dramatic 3-2 win against EARIST. Ateneo’s chances looked grim entering the final set but shots by JJ Sandoval and Duane Teves helped the guys crawl back from a 5-point deficit to win the deciding set, 15-12. Earlier in the day, the Blue Spikers lost three well-fought sets against USJR.

Ateneo slaughtered both University of the Immaculate Conception and St. Paul University Dumaguete in the final day of the men’s basketball eliminations. Former Zobel standout Gwynne Capacio topscored for the Eagles in both games. He posted 16 points versus UIC and lead the team to an 81-34 victory. Later in the day, Ateneo plowed through the St. Paul squad, 115-45. Capacio lead the team with 17 points.

The softball team beat Central Philippines University, 6-4. Ina Yulo pitched a complete game giving up three hits and tallying three strikeouts. Ateneo capitalized on CPU’s errors and timely hits from Tiffany Mathay, Veronica Abello, Gianna Banzon, and Chesca Altomonte to put Ateneo ahead 6-2 after five innings. CPU got two runs in the last inning to cut the lead. Ateneo then retired the final two batters to end the game.

The Ateneo-La Salle rivalry extended to lawn tennis in day three of the Unigames. The women’s team lost both games to the team from Taft. While the men’s team won two games out of three. Julius Lagman and rookie Andre Banate beat a powerhouse La Salle duo (6-3, 5-7, 11-9).
