Lady Eagles falter against Adamson

The Ateneo Lady Eagles were heavy underdogs going into their match-up with the league leading Adamson Lady Falcons. They had lost guard Angel Morales to a possible ACL injury, and team captain Mariana Lopa was sick with fever.

Still, the Lady Eagles gave their all in the game. Indeed, for the first few minutes it seemed as though the Lady Eagles would be able to pull off an upset victory. Adamson was able to regroup, however, and eventually rolled their way into 73-40 win. The Lady Eagles’ record dropped to 3-6.

Ateneo got on the board first thanks to a three pointer by Samantha Ong, and Jennifer Dimaano added a lay-up to give the Lady Eagles an early 5-0 lead. Adamson would strike back with an 8-0 run capped by a Katherine Sandel lay-up off Analyn Almasan’s alley-oop. Sarah Mercado eventually stopped the bleeding with a lay-up, and the Lady Eagles were able to keep the first quarter close, trailing 13-10.

The second quarter was the beginning of the end for the Lady Eagles. After a Valerie Chua jumper at the 8:40 mark of the quarter, the Lady Eagles would be unable to score again until the 2:12 mark. Adamson would go on a 10-0 blitz that broke the game open. The Lady Falcons would hold a double digit lead in the half, 27-16.

Although the Lady Eagles continued to fight in the second half of the game, in the end the Adamson squad was simply too tall and too strong. The Lady Eagles would be outscored 46-24 in the second half of the game. To add to the Lady Eagles’ woes, they committed 36 turnovers that the Lady Falcons translated into 31 fast break points. Rebounding was also a crucial problem, as the Ateneo squad would be out-rebounded 58 to 32.

The Lady Eagles will try to get back on the winning track on Tuesday, August 24 against the UST Lady Tigresses.
