Lady Eagles bag win no. 1

Ateneo 3, NU 1
25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 26-24

The Lady Eagles endured a ravenous National University Lady Bulldogs in a four-set matchup that swung Ateneo’s way, 3-1, Wednesday at the FilOil Arena.

Ateneo started the season with gutsy second and third sets against the defending champions, UST. This time around, the Lady Eagles were determined to play consistently strong to get things rolling with their first win of the season.

The Lady Eagles rallied in the first two sets to get an edge over NU. In the third set, however, the Lady Bulldogs stunned Ateneo with grittier attacks. Ateneo was left dumbfounded as they fumbled on the receiving end.

With momentum on their side, NU continued to get points off rallies punctuated by spikes from Mervic Mangui.

But Ateneo wouldn’t let their 2-1 lead go to waste. Hungry for a W, rookie Ella de Jesus scored 4 straight points for Ateneo to lift them to a 23-20 lead.

NU didn’t roll over easily and crawled to tie the set 24-all.

A quick, smart tip in by Gretchen Ho caught the Lady Bulldogs off guard and sealed the deal for Ateneo 26-24 in the fourth set.

The Lady Eagles look to continue their winning ways in their game against UE on December 5, 2PM at the San Juan Arena.
