The Ateneo de Manila Women’s Volleyball team defeated the Adamson University Lady Falcons in 4 sets, 25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, on Saturday afternoon for their second round meeting.

The Lady Eagles started off strong in the first set, scoring 12 attack points over Adamson’s 7. The first set was also the shortest one in the game. It was finished in 21 minutes with the Lady Eagles taking it, 25-16.

The Lady Eagles managed to escape with a 25-22 win in the second set to take a 2 set lead over the Lady Falcons.

Ateneo had a couple of chances to close out the match in the third set but unforced errors, 8 in the third set, allowed Adamson to stay in the match.

But with Player of the Game, Jem Ferrer, giving excellent sets, well placed attacks from team captain Fille Cainglet, Alyssa Valdez, and Dzi Gervacio gave Ateneo the fourth set and the match, 25-19.

Valdez top-scored for the Lady Eagles with 19 points while Cainglet and Gervacio added 18 and 13 respectively. Ferrer had 41 excellent sets in the match and libero Dennise Lazaro had 18 excellent digs.

The Lady Eagles will aim for their 10^th win this season when they face the FEU Lady Tamaraws on Feb. 5, Sunday, at 3:30 pm.

Earlier in the day, the Ateneo de Manila Men’s Volleyball team lost to the National University spikers in straight sets, 16-25, 17-25, 20-25.

Ricci Gonzales and Ysrael Marasigan had 6 points each to lead the Blue Eagles in scoring.

The Blue Eagles will aim for their second win this season when they go up against Adamson University on Feb 4, Saturday, at 10:30 am at the FilOil/Flying V Arena.

The Blue Eagles defeated neighbors University of the Philippines, 10-0, Sunday morning at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

Ateneo got an early lead over the Maroons with three runs in the first inning courtesy of Kevin Ramos, Charles Catangui, and Matt Laurel. Catangui and Matthew Reyes added two more runs in the second inning. The third inning saw Gab Bagamasbad, Kirk Long, and Adriene Bernardo scoring for the Blue Eagles. And to finish the game off, Laurel and Pelos Remollo scored runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Hail Mary nine showed an exceptional display of both offense and defense as they got 13 hits and completely shutting out UP. The match ended after the top of the fifth inning as Ateneo was leading by 10 runs.

The Blue Eagles will aim for their seventh straight win on Thursday, Feb. 2, 7:30 am against the Adamson University batters.

GO, ATENEO! ONE BIG FIGHT!

The Blue Eagles found themselves down after the first inning when DLSU scored a run. But they we able to turn the situation around and scored 4 runs courtesy of Matt Laurel, Dio Remollo, Gab Bagamasbad, and Pelos Remollo on top of the second inning. They kept the lead at 4-2, even when La Salle scored at the bottom of the second.

The Green Archers were able to tie the game at the bottom of the fourth. After a scoreless fifth for both teams, Laurel scored another run for the Blue Eagles on top of the sixth.

A one point lead was not enough for the Eagles, so Bagamasbad, Pelos Remollo, and Adriene Bernardo scored runs in the eighth inning for a 4 point lead over the Archers. A shut out in the ninth, gave the Eagles their fifth win in as many games and a first round sweep.

The Lady Eagles found themselves down by 2 runs at the end of the first inning. But Madeleine Lhuillier was able to cut down the lead to 1 after scoring on top of the second inning. However, the Lady Tigers were able to score 3 runs when it was their turn at bat.

In the third inning, Francesca Santos hit a sacrifice fly to the center fielder that allowed Sarah Uy to score, but the Lady Eagles were still down 2-5.

The third and last run of Ateneo came in the third inning when team captain Regina Yulo hit another sacrifice fly to the second baseman to allow Lhuillier another run.

The Lady Eagles end their first round campaign with a 1-4 win-loss record.

After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Eagles got an early 2-0 lead with a run by Andy Tan in the second inning and Matt Laurel in the third. Adriene Bernardo added another run in the fifth inning.

It was almost a shut out by Ateneo by UST’s Irvin Tuazon was able to get a run because of an Ateneo error.
In the ninth inning, Ateneo made sure that the Tigers will not be able to catch up by scoring 5 runs and shutting out the Tigers in the bottom of the ninth.

Laurel and Adriene Bernardo had 2 runs each while Andy Tan, John Altomonte, Charles Catangui, and Luke Paolo Bernardo added 1 run each. Ateneo had 10 hits compared to UST’s 3. The Blue Eagles also exhibited great defense only committing 1 error to UST’s 6.

The Blue Eagles will face the De La Salle University batters next. The match is scheduled for January 26, Thursday, 9:30 am at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Lady Archers had an early lead in the match as they got a run in the first inning. But the Lady Eagles were able to get three runs in the third inning and another run in the fourth to wrestle the lead from the Lady Archers.

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Eagles seemed on their way to win the match. However, the lady batters of De La Salle score 3 runs on top of the seventh inning to tie the game.

With the Lady Eagles at bat, they needed only one run to end the game. And Francesca Altomonte delivered that run. Altomonte hit a double then went on for a run when Francesca Santos hit a single.

The Lady Eagles had 8 hits compared to DLSU’s 7.

The next match of the Lady Eagles will be on Wednesday, January 25, 9:00 am against the UST Lady Batters at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

The Blue Eagles started strong with 6 runs in the first inning. They followed it with 2 and 4 runs in the second and third innings but was unable to score in the fourth. The Eagles got 2 more runs on top of the fifth. They also shut out the Maroons in the first 4 innings before the UP batters got 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The mercy rule in baseball takes effect in the fifth inning.

Adriane Bernardo, Kevin Ramos, and Matt Laurel had 3 runs each. The Blue Eagles had 17 hits, 15 more than UP, with only 2 errors.

Ateneo is on top of the team standings with a 3-0 win-loss record.

The Blue Eagles will face the University of Santo Tomas Baseball team on Sunday, 7:30 am, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball stadium.

The Blue Eagles were able to make 2 runs in the first inning but NU upped their defense on the Eagles, not letting them run in the next five innings. NU also tied the game with an inning each in the second and fourth inning.

The Blue Eagles, however, wanted to win big in the game. And that’s exactly what they did.

The Ateneo batters made 8 runs in the seventh inning and 3 runs in the eighth. The game ended at the 8th inning via the 10-run rule.

Adriane Bernardo, Kevin Ramos, Charles Catangui, and Matt Laurel had 2 runs each.

The Blue Eagles will go up against the batters of neighbors University of the Philippines on Thursday, January 19, 9:30 am at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

On Saturday, the Ateneo Lady Eagles lost in their second game of the season. They fell to the Adamson University lady batters, 4-6.

The Lady Eagles will try to go for win number 1 against the University of the Philippines on Wednesday, January 18, 11 am at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

On Saturday, January 14, the Blue Eagles lost to the University of the East netters, 2-3. Mark Balce won the first singles match, 7-5, 6-1, but UE went on to win the other singles matches and the first doubles match. Andre Banate and Johann Exconde teamed up to win the second doubles match, 6-1, 6-1, but it was already a no-bearing match.

Later that day, the Lady Eagles suffered the same fate as they fell to the lady netters of the University of Santo Tomas, 1-4. Joan Opulencia was the only Lady Eagle who won a match, 6-4, 6-2.

On Sunday, January 15, the Blue Eagles once again fell to their opponents. They lost to the University of Santo Tomas, 1-4.

Mark Balce won the first singles match for the Blue Eagles, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. But the rest of the Blue Eagles weren’t so lucky as the Tigers swept the rest of the matches.

The Ateneo Men’s Lawn Tennis team will face the National University netters next. Their match is scheduled for Januay 21, 12 noon at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Courts. Meanwhile, the Lady Eagles will go up against their De La Salle University counterparts on Sunday, January 22, 9 am also at Rizal Memorial.

The Ateneo Lady Eagles faced their green and white counterparts from De La Salle University. The Lady Eagles exhibited great defense against La Salle. They also had a number of shots at goal but they were not able to convert. The match ended with neither team able to score a goal.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo Blue Eagles fell to neighbors University of the Philippines, 0-2, Saturday afternoon at the Ateneo High School Football Field.

It was a match flawed by high emotions, near fights, and a lot of yellow cards. Michael Mabanag, Ansel Alvarez, Emmanuel Paredes, and goalie RS Mantos were all given yellow cards. In addition, Mantos also received a red card and will most likely sit out the next match of Ateneo.

The Blue Eagles will go up against the University of the East booters on Wednesday, January 18, 1 pm at the Ocampo Field in Ateneo while the Lady Eagles will face their Far Eastern University counterparts on January 19, 3:15 pm also at the Ocampo Field.
